How UK student loan repayments work

GOV.UK says Plan 1, Plan 2, Plan 4 and Plan 5 repayments are 9% of income over the relevant threshold, while Postgraduate loans are repaid at 6% over their threshold. If you have more than one type of loan, deductions can happen at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as interest?

No. This calculator estimates repayments from income, not loan interest or final write-off outcomes.

Can postgraduate and undergraduate repayments stack?

Yes. GOV.UK explains that postgraduate repayments use a separate 6% rate and can be deducted alongside undergraduate-plan repayments.

Why does my payslip differ slightly?

Payroll works by pay period and can be affected by bonuses, overtime, refunds, and plan records held by your employer.
