Use this GTA VI storage calculator to check whether the game fits on your PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, and how many gigabytes to delete if it does not. Enter the free space your console reports, the install size, any patch allowance and the margin you want to keep.
GTA VI Storage Calculator
Check install space against the free space on your console.
Result summary
Default estimate: 212 GB install, no patch allowance, 20 GB margin and 300 GB free. Free space is the figure your console shows, not the drive size.
How much space does GTA VI need?
PlayStation asks you to clear a minimum of 212 GB on your PS5 before installing Grand Theft Auto VI. That is the default in the calculator. It is a PlayStation figure for the game itself, so it does not include any patch released after launch.
No separate Xbox Series X|S install size had been published when this page was last checked on 8 November 2026. If you play on Xbox, treat 212 GB as a working number and change the install size field when a figure appears on your console’s store page.
The game is only announced for PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S. It is not coming to PS4.
How the calculation works
The calculator adds the install size and the patch allowance to get the space needed. It compares that with the free space you enter, plus the margin you want to keep for saves, captures and other updates.
- Space needed is the install size plus the patch allowance.
- Left after install is your free space minus the space needed, never below zero.
- GB to free up is the space needed plus your margin, minus your free space, never below zero.
If your console shows 300 GB free, the game needs 212 GB and you keep a 20 GB margin, you finish with 88 GB spare. If it shows 231 GB free with the same settings, you are 1 GB short and need to free up 1 GB first.
Storage scenarios
The table uses a 212 GB install and a 20 GB margin. Only the free space and the patch allowance change.
| Scenario | Free space | Left after install | GB to free up | What changed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nearly full console | 150 GB | 0 GB | 82 GB | Most of the library has to go first |
| Short by a fair margin | 200 GB | 0 GB | 32 GB | Still well short even after clearing a little |
| One GB short | 231 GB | 19 GB | 1 GB | Deleting one small game or a few clips is enough |
| Exact fit with margin | 232 GB | 20 GB | 0 GB | The margin is fully used, so there is nothing spare |
| Typical mid-use console | 300 GB | 88 GB | 0 GB | Comfortable with room left over |
| Mostly empty drive | 500 GB | 288 GB | 0 GB | Plenty of space for other games alongside it |
| Exact fit, with a 15 GB patch allowance | 232 GB | 5 GB | 15 GB | A patch allowance turns the same free space into a shortfall |
Use the free space figure from your console’s storage screen. The drive size printed on the box is larger, because the system software takes a share of it.
Freeing up space
If the calculator says to free up space, work through the cheapest options first.
- Open your console’s storage screen and sort by size. A few large games usually account for most of the space.
- Delete finished games you can download again later. Save data is kept separately, but check your console’s cloud backup first.
- Move or delete screenshots and video clips. They are easy to overlook and can add up.
- Leave the margin in place. Updates often need working room on top of the final size.
- Run the calculator again after each round of deleting so you know when to stop.
Pre-load and timing
Pre-load needs the same room as the finished install. Pre-loading opens on 10 November 2026, and the game itself unlocks at midnight local time on 19 November 2026, so clear space before the download starts. Pre-loading does not make the game playable early.

FAQ
How big is the GTA VI download?
PlayStation lists a minimum of 212 GB of free space on PS5. Rockstar can change the figure before or after launch, so check your console’s store page before you delete anything.
Does the 212 GB include the day-one patch?
The figure is the PlayStation minimum for the game. No patch size had been published when this page was checked on 8 November 2026, which is why the calculator has a patch allowance that starts at 0 GB. Raise it if you want a safety buffer.
Will GTA VI fit on a 512 GB console?
Possibly, but not alongside much else. Enter the free space your console shows and the calculator tells you the shortfall. A console with a 512 GB drive reports less than 512 GB free once system files are counted.
Is the Xbox install size different?
No Xbox figure had been published when this page was checked. Use 212 GB as a working number and update the install size field when the Xbox store page shows a number.
Can you play early by pre-loading?
No. Rockstar says the game releases at midnight local time on 19 November 2026 in all regions, on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-loading only downloads it ahead of time.
When does pre-load start?
On PlayStation 5, pre-load begins at midnight local time on 10 November 2026. On Xbox Series X|S, it begins globally at 12 a.m. GMT on the same day.
This is an estimate, not a guarantee that a download will succeed. Verify the install size on your console’s store page before you delete saves or games.
